Portobello Market, I had heard about it so many times and this week, during my stay in London, I finally had the chance to visit this ‘world famous market’. I took the subway, got out at Ladbroke Grove and there it was on Portobello road. It was actually much smaller than I had imagined. I think there were just about twenty different stands. Some of them sold jewelry, others vintage or second hand clothing and there were even some stands with interior goods.
A lady told me a big part of the designer items on Portobello market was fake and I could tell by the people being very afraid of me taking pictures of the pieces. Next to some of the really affordable accessories were fake Chanel and Hermès items. I spotted lots of collier de chien bracelets and look-a-like Hermès scarves as well as some necklaces with a CC (Chanel) pendant.
If you’re looking for some unique jewelry, low priced second hand dresses, vintage photos and magazine covers, a stand out army jacket or a David Bowie tee this market is one to visit. And maybe you should go there anyway to take a walk on Portobello road and visit some of the small vintage shops. I unfortunately returned to my hotel empty handed, but at least I now know where so many designers get their inspiration from.
Pictures all made by me.
